Green Housing
Rebuild Green is presenting residents of New Orleans with new choices for construction in their rebuilding efforts. We are focusing on Structural Concrete Integrated Panels, also known as SCIPs or SKIPs, as a major component for rebuilding housing units that were devastated by storm or flood.
SCIP panels offer the following advantages:
- Made of styrofoam that is held in place by wire rebar and then encased in concrete, the Panels when erected are 60% recycled or reclaimed materials by volume and at least 40% recycled or reclaimed materials by weight
- Insulation whose R-40-level performance saves 40-60% on energy costs
- Strength from continuous paneling that can withstand winds stronger than those of Level 5 hurricane (175 miles per hour)
- Concrete, steel and styrofoam are completely resistant to insects and mold.
- Roofs and floors as well as walls can be readily built with the Panels.
- Savings up to 50% in time of construction and cost of labor.
SCIP technology can also be used to safely and cheaply provide the minimum of 8 feet of entry floor elevation raising that we believe is essential for housing in flood-threatened areas.
Finally, the ease with which these Panels can be cut and assembled makes them perfect for achieving the traditional or individual styles of architecture that returning residents may want.
